English Poetry Project in Class IX

1. Project Plan
(1.1) The Define Phase
(1.11) Introduction:

  • Write a statement describing the overall purpose of the project.
  • What is the key challenge or problem the project is aiming to address?
  • What are students intended to learn from the project?
This project is intended to make class IX students to explore the following areas:
1.       What is poetry, and how is it different from other types of writing?
2.       How should a poem be divided into lines?
3.       What poetic meter is, and why you should care.
4.        A step-by-step guide on how to write poetry. Advice on what to write about, how to get started, and choosing the right words.
5.       How to edit and compile a poetry book?
This project helps students recast what they are reading in a different genre, which in turn, makes students more insightful readers and helps develop creativity in thinking and writing.

     Describe the scope of your project. This may include class and section, subjects it covers, self shills to be used etc. as well as other factors affecting scope.

2 - Define Phase
2.1 Essential Question:
 Put in writing the question that will engage the students
·         What should I write poems about?
·         How should I decide the right form for my poem?
·         What are common poetry problems that affect the work of new poets, and how can I avoid them?
·         People say it's not the size that matters, but what you do with it -- how does this relate to poetry?


2.2 Grouping Strategy:
 Describe the criteria that will be used to form students’ team and how this maps to the goals of the project.

The main topic will be discussed. Students will be asked to select a sub topic to compose a poem about. Students with similar interest irrespective of gender will made into a group.


2.3 Learning Environment:
 Describe the learning environment for the project including any classroom adaptation that will be required.

Most of the discussion will be conducted in groups inside the class. A part of the class display board will be used to display the notices, instructions and progress of the project. Computer labs will be used for the majority of the online work. Research notes will be recorded in computers/blogs. Some collaboration between students will take place through email and blog.

Authentic tasks such as
1.       Research the theme
2.       Select the apt topic
3.       Compose the poem
4.       Identify the poetic devices used by them
5.       Find out a catchy title


2.42 Formative Assessment: 
Regular feedback provided by the group leaders on the work progress in different stages such as research, finding the theme, finding the title, composition of poem etc

 2.43 Summative Assessment:
Assessment will be based on
1.       Research
2.       Fluency in writing
3.       Organization of ideas
4.        Co-operation in the group
5.       Creativity
6.       Originality.

2.44 Rubrics:
Rubrics will be used to assess the poetic creation


2.45 Gradings:
Project grades will be based on a combination of scores from assessments made during the project. A rubric will be used to compile grades.


PBL Lesson 3 - Plan Phase
3.1 Work Breakdown, Products and Milestones:
 List the project task and, if possible at this stage include the sub-tasks. For each task add the product that will be created and indicate it will be a milestone.

 Describe how you will incorporate review meetings and checkpoints in the project
A t the end of every month there will be a 20 minutes class conference to discuss progress, successes and challenges.
A checkpoint meeting for each team will be held for 10 minutes twice per month.
 Describe the balanced assessment plan for the project. List products that will be assessed during the project. List rubrics that need to be created before project launch.

PBL Lesson 5 - The Do Phase
 (5.1) Project Launch:
 Describe how the project will be launched, including how goals, expectation, rules, procedures, assessment, and grading will be presented to the students.
Project will be launched in the class. The project will be completedby 30th Novemeber. 2016. Students will compose poems on nature classify them into 8 catagories based on themes. Students will be graded according to their participation.
